Are your hiking boots pinching your toes or putting too much pressure on the top part of your feet? Do you get blisters or sores on your toes from wearing hiking boots that are too narrow? Women with wide feet have a really hard time finding hiking boots that fit, but it gets even harder for women who have extra wide feet. Most hiking boots are not designed to fit an extra wide foot, as they are not available in extra wide widths. The good news is that I have put together a list of the best extra wide hiking boots for women, and I will show you this list shortly.
Do Hiking Boots in Extra Wide Widths Exist?
I have found a few hiking boots that are available in extra wide widths (“XW”, “X-Wide”, “EEEE”). The selection is very limited, but all that you need is one pair of well-fitting hiking boots to enjoy your hike.
Unfortunately, most shoe brands don’t manufacture boots in different widths as a way of saving money. Did you know that the cost of mass produced shoes is kept low by producing only the most common styles (medium width)? The fewer variations there are, the less the cost is for shoe companies. So, for women with extra wide feet like yours, it gets harder to find shoes that fit.
Several women who walk to the shoe store complain that they are not able to wear hiking boots because of their extra wide feet, and they have to end up wearing sneakers. The main issue with wearing sneakers when going hiking is that your feet won’t be as supported and they might get wet depending on the type of terrain that you are walking on.

What Makes the Hiking Boots that I Recommend Ideal for Women with Extra Wide Feet?
☑️ Rounder Toe-Boxes: This feature is going to prevent your toes from overlapping or rubbing against one another or the side of the boots. Take a look at the image below, both hiking boots are the same size in length, but do you notice how the boot on the right has a rounded toe-box compared to the boot on the left?
☑️ Extra Depth: This feature is particularly important if you happen to have a high instep. Shoes that provide extra depth allow the feet to fit deeply inside of the boots and prevents the top part of your foot (instep), from rubbing against the top part of the shoes. Take a look at the image below, do you notice how the hiking boot on the right is a lot deeper compared to the hiking boot on the left? The boots are the same size in length, but as you can see the boot on the right is a lot deeper than the other.
☑️ Extra Wide Widths Available: All of the hiking boots that I recommend are available in extra wide widths, to allow extra space for your toes.
Where Can You Find Hiking Boots that Provide These 3 Features?
You can visit your local shoe store to check whether they carry any of these two shoe brands, and because each shoe brand and style fit differently, you should get your feet properly measured at your local shoe store. If you don’t have a local shoe store that you trust or you simply prefer to shop online, I will show you how to retrieve your exact foot length and shape from home.
Don’t Insist On Getting the Same Shoe Size You Have Always Wore
Your foot shape and size can change over time, and some of the factors that contribute to this change are pregnancy, aging and weight gain or loss. Over time and because of gravity, our feet might get longer and wider. As we age, the body’s ligaments and tendons lose their strength and ability to spring back. This means that our arches decrease, which flattens and lengthens the foot and toes.
This often results in an increase in shoe size by a half-size or more. You might also experience a change in foot width, meaning that even though you always ordered wide width shoes now you might have to start ordering extra wide shoes.
How to Find Out Your Exact Foot Length
So, you are confident that you have extra wide feet, but do you know your exact foot length? Do you know whether you have a high instep or not? Don’t insist on getting your shoes in a specific size simply because that has been the size that they always wore. I usually have to insist to them that they need to at least try the shoes in a different size to see how they feel.
Buying shoes online can be a challenge. If you are unsure of your current foot length, I suggest that you take a look at a free resource I created where I help women determine their exact foot shape from home:
