Editor’s Note: This post has been completely revamped and updated for accuracy on May 2022 and reflects an up-to-date selection of the best shoes for middle toe longer than the big toe.

Are you having a hard time finding a pair of shoes to accommodate your middle toe that is longer than your big toe? Have you developed any foot issues on your middle toe? Do you always have a hard time finding shoes that fit?

We can’t deny that our feet are relentless workers, the sad part is that they are one of the most under-appreciated parts of our body!

Most importantly, most women are not even conscious of what their foot anatomy is and what this means. It is no understatement to say that if your middle toe is longer than your big toe, then you need to find the appropriate shoes to accommodate your middle toe.

Even though that having your middle toe longer than your big toe is not so common, certain shoes will accommodate the shape of your middle toe.

The most common mistake I see women make is to buy longer shoes to prevent their middle toe from rubbing against the front of the shoes. Instead of going longer, you need to find shoes that provide extra depth and rounder toe-boxes to accommodate the length of your middle toe. I will discuss the importance of these two features in further detail.

Rest assured that it doesn’t matter how wide or how narrow your feet are, how flat or high your arches are, or if you have the middle toe longer than the big toe. There is always at least one particular shoe style out there that will fit the shape of your feet perfectly and I will help you find it.

I know exactly what type of shoe styles we need to look for if you have your middle toe as your longest toe. Now, if you have the middle toe longer than the big toe, we will have to find a shoe that provides 2 key features:

☑️ Rounder Toe-Boxes: This will help prevent the middle toe from rubbing against the end of your shoes or overlapping the other toes.

☑️ Extra Depth: This will allow your feet to sit comfortably inside the shoe and prevent the top of the toes to rub against the top of the shoe.

Since I have been helping other women find their shoes online for over 5 years now, I can tell you that it’s hard to find an online shoe retailer that will allow you to filter by “depth of the shoe” or by “round toe-box”, but I have fitted most shoe styles and I am familiar with how each particular shoe styles fits.

I will show you a selection of the best shoes for the middle toe longer than the big toe shortly. I am sure you are tired of having to waste time, effort and money with shoes that don’t fit.

What Makes the Shoes I Recommend Effective?

Rounder Toe-Boxes

I’ll elaborate further on what shoes with round toe-boxes are and show you the differences among the different toe-boxes.

Let’s take a look at an example between a New Balance shoe style in medium width and an Asics shoe style in the same width and length. Do you notice how the New Balance shoe style has a much rounder toe-box than the Asics one?

These shoes are the same shoe width and the same shoe length but as you can see they will fit very differently.

A shoe with a round toe-box will work perfectly for a woman that has the middle toe longer than the big toe, or for women with wide or extra wide feet. You won’t have to get longer shoes because the round toe-box will prevent your middle toe from rubbing against the front of the shoe.

Considering my years of experience, I can tell which shoe styles have a rounder toe-box since they are also the best fitting styles for women who need orthotics, and at the shoe store that I work for we fit a lot of orthotics for women with different foot issues.

Extra Depth

A deep shoe will allow your feet to sit deeply inside the shoe, which will provide the following benefits:

✅ It will prevent the top of your feet or toes to rub against the top of your shoe.

✅ The feet will sit comfortably inside the shoe and you won’t have the impression that your feet are coming out of the shoe.

✅ If you need an orthotic, a deeper shoe will allow the orthotic to sit deeply inside the shoe for a much more comfortable fit.

Let’s take a look at the difference between a deep shoe and one that is not. Both of these shoe styles have an orthotic fitted inside them. Do you notice how the orthotic is sitting deeply in the New Balance shoe (pink and grey)?

The picture below shows it more clearly. Do you notice how the orthotic in the Asics shoe style (all black) is fitting much further up than in the New Balance shoe style?

Now, besides coming with a round toe-box and being deep, you need your shoes to also be supportive, lightweight, durable, and breathable.

Please remember this: It doesn’t matter how many features a particular shoe style has, if the shoes are not the correct size, you won’t get any of the benefits that the shoes have to offer. What’s even worse, you will end up creating several foot issues such as blisters, calluses, corns or even some more severe issues.

I always recommend women to g to their local fitting shoe store that they trust to be properly measured and fitted for shoes. The issue is that most local fitting shoe stores have been closing down, and we are left with big retailers that don’t really know how to measure feet.

  1. Hi Juan Pablo,
Because of your recommendation, I purchased the New Balance 840v4 and got them 1/2 size larger as you suggested.
Great fit. With my heel is more slim than the forefoot, I just tied with technique that creates a secure fit in the ankle area.
    Thank you very much!

  2. Hi Juan Pablo–
I have multiple foot issues. Have always had middle toe longer than first toe. And a high arch tending toward pronation. Now I have PTTD as well. As a child I wore very narrow widths but now wear medium width shoes. I have liked Merrell walking shoes as they seem to be comfortable for my toes but they are not making the model I liked the best anymore. I have tried Asics and New balance shoes with less comfort. I wonder what athletic walking shoe I should try. The numbers of brands and models are overwhelming.

    • Hi Susan –

I agree with you that the number of shoe brands and shoe styles can be overwhelming, and most women find themselves starring at a wall of shoes that look similar and very different at the same time. Where do you feel the most discomfort? Are you experiencing any foot pain? What is your shoe size? Once I have the answer to those questions I can send you specific shoe recommendations.

      • Hi Juan Pablo,
I have been running for a few months. I am currently wearing NB 520 V6. I love NB but am having trouble with my second toe on my right foot. My second and third toes are longer than my big toe. I bought the shoe a half size bigger but am wondering if it’s too big? My toes seem to slide around a little. I wear thinner socks as well because the thicker ones seem to be too tight on my toes. Is there any hope?

  3. I have a big toe that is 1/2 ” longer than the second toe! Also have high arches. Which brand is best for me? I have had some success with Asics in the past.

    • Hello Virginia,

It’s hard to recommend specific shoe brands for your condition as there are specific shoes among each shoe brand that might work a lot better than others. Before I can recommend specific shoe I need to know your actually foot shape (narrow, medium, wide, extra wide).

  4. I have a very long middle toe, my left foot is larger than my right and has a lower arch, and I have a prominent, defined narrow heel, low volume feet, all of which add up to a very large foot without the usual mass. I do best when both the front and back are fully lasted for a narrow fitted prominent heel (Like Ferragamos) And…I need a longer front last for the best fit that feels right. New Balance does work well, yet even those can be too wide in the foot making it difficult to walk. The more expensive the NB, made in the USA,the better my feet feel all day. If I go to a half size larger, the resulting gap in the front of the shoe creates a deep wrinkle that hurts my toes. So I now always go with a 10.5. SHould I go with an 11N? I hate wearing thick socks to walk in – I can’t feel the shoe. What’s your advice? If there is a 10.5 N in New Balance – I buy it. Those are hard to find and my shoes wear out pretty quickly as I love walking. Advice please.
