Editor’s Note: This post has been completely revamped and updated for accuracy on May 2022 and reflects an up-to-date selection of women’s shoes with a wide toe box.

Are you having a hard time finding shoes that are wide enough at the front? Have you tried every single shoe style in wide and extra wide widths and still feels like your toes are overlapping each other or rubbing against the side of the shoes?

If you identify with this then you need to look for shoe styles that come with a wide toe-box (the rounder the better). Let me start by telling you what the toe-box of the shoe is: It’s the front part of a shoe that covers and protects the toes. Toe boxes can be pointy or round depending on the shoe style, but if you have wide feet you will always want to look for shoe styles that come with round toe-boxes instead of pointy ones.

For example, let me show you the difference in toe-boxes between two shoes that are the same length and width:

The issue is that shoes don’t come labeled as with a “round toe box”, so women are often confused as to where and how they are supposed to find these types of shoes. The good news is that I know exactly which shoe styles come with a rounder toe-box and I will show you exactly which ones they are.

Shoes that fit properly will prevent foot issues such as blisters, calluses, and corns, as well as foot and leg pain.

In addition to coming with a round toe-box, the shoes must also be deep, since deep shoes will allow your feet to fit deeply inside the shoes and prevent your feet and toes from rubbing against the top part of the shoes.

Keep in mind that it doesn’t matter how narrow or wide their feet are, there is at least one particular shoe style out there that will fit the shape of their feet perfectly, and I will help you find it.

One of the most common mistakes I have noticed women make is to assume that getting a shoe style in a wide (“W”) or an extra wide width (“XW”) will automatically fit the shape of their wide feet. Certain shoe styles in a wide width can fit wider than a shoe style in an extra wide width, so it all depends on that particular shoe style.

Shoes with a wide toe-box are great for:

✅   Women who have very wide feet and need shoes with rounder toe-boxes to prevent their toes from overlapping against one another or rubbing against the side of the shoes.

✅   Women who have medium feet and need extra space around their toes. In this case, is better to find a shoe with a wide toe-box rather than choosing a shoe in a wide width.

✅   Women who have wide feet at the front but narrow heels.

✅   Women who need an orthotic to be fitted inside their shoes.

Trust me, you will see a notable difference after spending so much time in shoes with your toes smothered.

I will provide you with a selection of the best women’s shoes with a wide toe box shortly, but let me first show you how you can make sure you wear the correct shoe size.

Types of Toe-Boxes – Know the Difference!

Let’s also clarify that just because a shoe is labeled as wide width, (“W”), it doesn’t mean that it will automatically fit the shape of your wide feet. Let me elaborate.  The front part of the shoe, the toe-box, can be either rounded or pointy, which will affect the fit of the shoe.

You can refer to the picture below which shows the difference of a toe-box between a New Balance and an Adidas shoe style. Do you notice how the New Balance shoe (the one on the right), has a much rounder toe-box than the Adidas one? The Adidas shoe style comes in a wide width (“W”) and the New Balance comes in medium width (“M”)  and the shoes are the same shoe length. The New Balance shoe style has a much rounder toe-box than the Adidas one, even though the New Balance style is in a medium shoe width.

Now let’s take a look at another example between a New Balance shoe style in medium width and an Asics shoe style in the same width and length. Do you notice again how the New Balance shoe style has a much rounder toe-box than the Asics one?

Hence, you can find a shoe in an extra wide width but if it has a pointy toe box it won’t fit the shape of your feet. The same applies to finding a shoe in a wide width; if the toe-box is not round enough it won’t fit the shape of your wide feet.

A shoe with a round wide toe-box will prevent your toes from overlapping or rubbing against each other. The shoe brand New Balance makes the best shoes for women with wide or extra wide feet.

Shoes with Wide Toe-Boxes – Get the Right Size!

You should be aware that if you wear shoes that are too narrow for your feet, you will most likely start developing a myriad of foot issues. Ranging from minor issues like blisters, ingrown toenails, corns and calluses, crooked toes, and unsightly black toenails; and some other serious issues, like inflamed nerves, pain in the ball of the foot, and even arthritis.

Although a shoe might fit lengthwise, it might feel tight around the toes (in particular the small toe), and your feet won’t be able to keep their natural movement. The most common reason why the above-mentioned issues appear is from wearing shoes that are too narrow, so let’s keep your feet healthy by wearing shoes that fit.

I always recommend women to go to their local fitting shoe store to be properly fitted for shoes, but if you don’t have a shoe store in your area that you trust, start by reading an article I wrote where I describe the simplest, yet most effective way to figure out your foot size from home:

You will find it quite useful to know that you can find the right toe box by taking the insole out of the shoe and standing on it. If your toes or feet hang over the edge, it’s probably not the right kind of toe box.

If you are experiencing discomfort or pain in your feet, you can simply resolve it by buying a pair of shoes that fit the exact size and shape of your feet!

I only write reviews of shoe styles that I have fitted before, otherwise, I wouldn’t know how well-made they are, the amount of support that they provide, and how they fit. Disclosure: Keep in mind that we may receive commissions when you click our links and make purchases.

The bottom line is you need to make sure to listen to your feet and toes.  They surely have a lot to tell you about what is most comfortable for them.

  1. Thank you for this information. I’m looking for a cross trainer or a jazz sneaker with a wide toe box, suitable for high impact studio workouts, similar to Zumba. A running shoe isn’t ideal because of the lateral movements. Any recommendations? I have already ordered and returned 4 pairs of shoes.

    • Hi Lisa –

      Apologies for my late response.

We need to find a pair of shoes that comes with a shock-absorbing sole to help minimize any sudden stomps or stumbles you might have, and add a floaty feeling to some of your movements that can help you concentrate on your Zumba routine. The midsole of the sneaker needs to add a bouncy feeling that encourages repeated movements, and the shoes need to be lightweight and flexible in order no prevent you from slow you down during long exercise sessions.
