Editor’s Note: This post has been completely revamped and updated for accuracy on May 2022 and reflects an up-to-date selection of the best shoes for second toe bigger than the big toe.
Is your second toe bigger than your big toe? Having a second toe that’s bigger than your big toe is more common than you can imagine. Also, did you know that there is a name for this condition, which is called Morton’s Toe?
Morton’s Toe is a common forefoot disorder where the second toe is bigger than the big toe.
First off, I want to clarify that shoes aren’t designed for women with a bigger second toe. What we need to look for are shoes that come with a round toe-box instead of a pointier one to prevent your second toe from rubbing against the front of the shoes, since this can lead to blisters or hard corns on your second toe.
Also, women with the second toe bigger than the big toe are at a greater risk of developing hammer toes (this is when the toe becomes permanently bent). That is why it’s so important to make sure there is enough room for that second toe!
Below you can find an image of a woman with the second toe longer than the big toe:
The good news is that I know which shoe styles come with a rounder toe-box than others, and I will help you find them.
There are only certain shoe styles that will be able to accommodate your condition, and I know which ones they are because I have fitted them before. These shoe styles that I will describe in this article provide extra depth and they come with rounder toe-boxes.
You might be wondering… Why do the shoes have to provide extra depth? This feature will allow your feet to sit deeply inside the shoes and prevent your toes from rubbing against the front top part of the shoes.
Shoes for Second Toe Bigger Than the Big Toe — The Key Features!
For women that have the second toe longer than the big toe, I always explain that there are two major features that the shoes must provide:
☑️ Rounder Toe-Boxes: A shoe with a round toe-box means that the front of the shoe has a rounder shape instead of being pointier, which means that it allows extra space for the toes to move around and don’t overlap each other or rub against the side or the top of the shoe. Take a look at the picture below for clarification:
These are two shoes that are the same size in length and width but look at how different the toe-boxes are. The shoe made by New Balance has a much rounder toe-box than the shoe made by Asics which has a much pointier toe-box.
In summary, if you have the second toe longer than the big toe you will always choose the shoe that has the roundest toe-box, and in this particular case it will be the New Balance style.
☑️ Extra Depth: Shoes that provide extra depth allow your feet to fit deeply and more comfortably inside the shoe and prevent the toes from rubbing against the top of the shoe. Deep shoes also prevent you from having the impression that your feet are coming out of the shoe since your feet are sitting deep inside the shoe.
For example, if you have a high instep or you need an orthotic to be fitted inside the shoe, or if you always have the impression that your feet are coming out of the shoe, you can rest assured that deeper shoes will take care of those issues!
Let’s take a look at a picture to compare a deep pair of shoes versus one that is not. Do you notice how the orthotic in the grey and pink shoe (New Balance) is fitting deeply inside the shoes?
Here is another picture to see it more clearly:
I have fitted shoes that are deep before and they make an enormous difference in the way the shoes feel and fit.
Nonetheless, besides these two major features, the shoes that I will describe below will also be supportive, lightweight, flexible, and breathable.
However, I want you to keep one thing in mind: It doesn’t matter how many features a shoe style provides, if it’s not fitted properly, you won’t get any of the benefits that the shoes have to offer. What’s even worse, you will develop foot issues to your feet such as blisters, calluses, and corns or some other major foot complications.
Start by reading an article I wrote where I describe the simplest, yet most effective way to figure out your exact foot size from home:
