My Experience Helping Women with “Complicated” Foot Shapes

For the past 10 years, I have been working for a family shoe store where we specialize in helping women with varied foot shapes. I have fitted hundreds of different shoes and I am familiar with which shoe styles are better for women with wide feet and narrow heels!

I have helped several women with “complicated” foot shapes such as long, slender toes, high arches, high insteps, a wide base, and a narrow short heel… you name it! Some other women that came to the shoe store had short toes, flat feet, and a quad heel.

Yes, it is possible to not have your feet slip off your shoes all the time! Let me help you find the perfect pair of dress shoes for you.

What Features Make the Dress Shoes I Recommend Ideal for Your Feet?

1️⃣ Round toe boxes: the extra room that round toe boxes provide, prevents your toes from overlapping against one another or the sides of the shoe making your feet hurt.

2️⃣ Narrow heel counters – This will help keep your feet in place, and it will help you avoid slipping out of your shoes all the time! It locks your feet in place. It is hard to find narrow- heel counters and even if the shoe you found has it, I would recommend you also choose one with ankle straps.

3️⃣ Ankle straps – This is a great feature to avoid your feet from slipping out.

You want to look for shoes that will prevent your feet from slipping out. The constant rubbing of your foot with the shoe at your ankle will cause blisters and it will hurt! Shoes should never cause pain if they are, you are not wearing the correct shoe which takes me to another important topic.

Are You 100% Sure of Your Foot Length and Shape?

Did you know that there is a study by the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society that showed that 88% of American women wear shoes that are too small?

There is nothing more uncomfortable than wearing the wrong size shoe! Be aware that your foot shape and size can change overtime. This can happen because of pregnancy, aging, and weight gain or loss. The ligaments and tendons also lose strength due to aging and make our arches decrease which can flatten and lengthen the foot and toes. Because of this, I recommend you get your feet measured every 6 months. Additionally, when it comes to sizes you don’t only need to only look at the length of your foot but also the width! Quality measurements start with expert consultation, so let me help you retrieve your exact foot length:

  1. Finding shoes for anybody with complicated feet, can be quite a challenge. I can remember as a child going with my mom to find shoes for her, She had very narrow feet, a AAA (in those days is what she always looked for) and the old size 7 length (American size 9), together with a bunion, so it was indeed a mission. So if she found more than one pair, she would buy them all. She would certainly have benefitted from your personalized service!

Although I have fairly narrow feet, they are quite long and I have very narrow heels, so I often struggle to find shoes that don’t fall off my feet at the back. Looking for an ankle strap is a great suggestion. Thank you for sharing your expertise to help all those with combination feet.

  2. This is an awesome resource. My wife is so happy with her new dress shoes. She always complained how she couldn’t wear them because they created blisters. Do you have shoe recommendations for running shoes? I need running shoe recommendations for wide feet and very narrow heels please. Any price point is fine as long as they can fit that foot shape.

  3. My wife has extra wide feet and complains that the top part of her feet hurts. She is always saying that the shoes dig into her feet. I have taken her to several shoe stores but no-one was able to help. Once we find a shoe that is comfortable it ends up slipping off her feet. I am planning to order the Clarks style and I will keep you posted.
