Most women make the common mistake of assuming that their feet are fine simply because they don’t hurt.

Keep in mind that all of the structure and joints above the feet depend on the feet, so you might not be dealing with foot pain, but that pain might be on your knees, hips, back, etc.

While some women are born with flat arches, for others, their arches will gradually fall over time due to age or the pressures of heavy or high impact activities. For example, women over the age of 40 and pregnant women are  at a higher risk of developing adult acquired flatfeet. In addition, women with medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and obesity are also at a higher risk.

My Experience Helping Women with Knee Pain

I have worked for a specialized shoe store that focuses on helping women with “complicated” foot shapes as well as foot and leg problems for the last 10 years. There are several women who walk into the store complaining about knee pain, and the first thing I do is check the shoes they are wearing and also take a look at their feet. I have helped several women with knee pain significantly reduce and, in some cases, fully eliminate their pain, and I believe I can help you as well.

To prevent your toes from rubbing against the front or side part of the shoes, I highly recommend that you order these shoes half a size larger than the size that your feet measure. This translates to 0.3 inches or 0.6 centimeters of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoes.

My Final Thoughts on Women with Knee Pain

There are studies that show that women are more prone to developing knee pain because of their relatively wide hips that can place extra stress on their joints, and female hormones are another reason as they seem to weaken ligaments. There is nothing we can do about this, but there are other factors that are within your control and we should take advantage of them.

Physical therapy can be really effective for women with knee pain as it might help strengthen the area around the knee, the pelvis, and the core.
