Are you flat-footed and have been experiencing foot or leg pain? Furthermore, have you been diagnosed with overpronation and have been looking for a pair of supportive sandals? Overpronation is a condition in which the arches of the feet roll inwards or downwards when walking, and it is also commonly known and referred to as flat feet. In this post, I will help you find the best women’s sandals for overpronation based on my many years of shoe fitting experience.

I have noticed that something so simple such as wearing a pair of shoes with arch support has a tremendous impact on the way you walk. However, you also need to keep in mind that overpronation can come from the ankles too. So, if your ankles are turning inwards or outwards it will result in your feet not being able to be straight.

About Overpronation What You Need to Know

When women overpronate, they put pressure on parts of their bodies where they are not supposed to, and this leads to foot and leg pain, as well as other serious issues in the future such as lower back problems. Below you can find an image of a woman who has flat feet and overpronation:

If you are overpronating you must wear a pair of good supportive sandals. By good supportive sandals, I mean sandals that provide good arch as well as ankle support. The good news is that I recently found a specific sandal style that has been the most effective one in treating overpronation, and will also help align your feet and help you walk straighter. Take a look at an image of the same woman wearing a pair of the sandals that I recommend:

Most women that are flat-footed tend to overpronate, since when they are weight bearing, their feet tend to collapse and turn inwards due to not having an arch to prevent the feet from collapsing. However, a shoe/sandal with sufficient arch support will prevent your feet from collapsing.

Finding a good pair of sandals that you can use if you have overpronation can be a challenging thing, especially if you don’t know what styles to look for. In addition to providing good arch support, you need to find a pair of sandals that will fit the shape of your feet perfectly, since sandals that are too narrow or too wide will make you more prone to developing foot issues such as blisters, calluses, and corns.

There are certain sandals that have proven to be the best ones for helping treat and prevent overpronation. Women love the sandals I recommend because they are extremely versatile, and they can wear them for short/long distance walks or different types of activities due to the great amount of support that they provide.

Features of Sandals for Overpronation – Keep Your Feet Healthy!

The sandals I recommend provide key features that are optimal for women with overpronation. Please take a look at these features below:

1️⃣ Arch Support/Shock Absorption: This feature helps prevent your feet from collapsing and turning inwards. The shock absorption reduces the impact that your feet take every time they come in contact with the ground and relieve the stress on your feet and legs.

2️⃣ Heel Support: This feature helps protect and support your heels and ankles by minimizing the impact that your heels take every time they come in contact with the ground.

3️⃣ Good Traction: The sandals provide great traction, so you can confidently walk around on wet surfaces.

4️⃣ Adjustable hook-and-loop strap: This will allow you to put them on and take them off easily.

5️⃣ Lightweight and Flexible: While these sandals are supportive, they are still lightweight and flexible to prevent your feet and legs from easily getting tired. Your sandals should always bend at the ball of the foot but no further. Although, it’s important for your sandals to be flexible but not too flexible, otherwise they won’t provide enough support.

Plus… Physical therapists also recommend these particular sandals for women who have foot issues such as overpronation, rolled ankles, or foot and leg pain.

Complications of Overpronation – Take Prompt Action!

You should be aware that overpronation leads to strain on the big and second toe and impacts the stability of the foot. The excessive rotation of the foot can lead to more rotation of the tibia in the lower leg, making yourself more prone to knee pain and shin splints (also referred to as medial tibial stress syndrome).

Due to overpronation, there is also an elevated risk of injury and heel pain that may be the result of the stress on the ligaments and tendons of the foot.

Lastly, overpronation could lead to the following minor to severe foot issues:

  • Back and hip pain
  • Foot rigidity
  • Ankle sprain and foot instability
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Hammer toes and claw toes

If you notice any of these symptoms, start by consulting a doctor or physical therapist. They will be able to lead you on to the next steps to take, which could be wearing good supportive shoes, being fitted for an orthotic, or both!

    • Hello Anna,

Do you know whether you have healthy arches, flat feet, or high arches? Supination usually occurs in people who have high arches, while overpronation occurs in people who have flat feet. To recommend specific shoes for your feet I also need to know whether you have narrow, medium, wide, or extra wide feet.
