Editor’s Note: This post has been completely revamped and updated for accuracy on May 2022 and reflects an up-to-date selection of comfortable shoes for diabetic women.
Did you know that when diabetic women wear the wrong shoe style or the wrong shoe size they are at a higher risk of developing foot injuries and skin conditions such as blisters, foot ulcers, and fungal infections? Wearing the correct types of shoes will help reduce friction between your feet and the shoes which can help prevent skin breakdown. I have put together a list of the most comfortable shoes for diabetic women, and I will show you this list shorty.
My Experience Helping Diabetic Women Find the Correct Types of Shoes
A diabetic might not be aware if she injures her foot, so it’s important to perform frequent checks to your feet to make sure you have not developed any blisters calluses, or sores.
What Makes the Shoes I Recommend Ideal for Diabetic Women?
The shoes I recommend provide 4 key features that makes them ideal for women with diabetes:
- Extra Depth: This feature helps prevent the top part of your feet (instep), from rubbing against the top part of the shoes. This is a very important feature as it allows for proper movement of the foot while creating a pressure-free environment. Most shoes don’t come labeled as “extra deep” so the only way to tell whether a shoe provides extra depth or not is by having fitted that shoe before. Take a look at the image below to better visualize the importance of getting shoes that provide extra depth:
- Round Toe-Boxes: This feature helps prevent your toes from overlapping each other or rubbing against the side of the shoes. It’s important to alleviate any pressure or friction in the toe area. Take a look at the image below to better visualize the difference between shoes with different toe-boxes. The shoes below are the same length and width, but do you notice how the shoe on the right has a rounder toe-box compared to the shoe on the left?
- Supportive Outsoles with Thicker Insoles: This feature will help support your feet and reduce friction and skin breakdown at the same time.
- Seamless and Well-Padded Interior: The shoes I recommend all provide soft uppers with smooth protective interior lining that don’t have any protruding stitching. These features will act as a barrier between your feet and the shoes, preventing foot issues such as sores or ulcers.
Before I show you a selection of the most comfortable shoes for diabetic women, I want to make sure you know your exact foot size, since this is crucial for your foot’s health. If you order your shoes too small or too narrow you will be more prone to developing foot issues.
Are You 100% Sure You Know Your Exact Foot Size? – Let’s Find Out!
Your foot shape and size can change over time, and some of the factors that contribute to this change are pregnancy, aging and weight gain or loss. Over time and because of gravity, our feet might get longer and wider.
As we age, the body’s ligaments and tendons lose their strength and ability to spring back. This means that our arches decrease, which flattens and lengthens the foot and toes.
This often results in an increase in shoe size by a half-size or more. You might also experience a change in foot width, meaning that even though you always ordered medium width shoes now you might have to start ordering wider shoes.
Don’t insist on getting your shoes in a specific size simply because that has been the size that they always wore. I usually have to insist to them that they need to at least try the shoes in a different size to see how they feel.
Buying shoes online can be a challenge. If you are unsure of your current foot shape or foot length, I suggest that you take a look at a different resource I created where I help women determine their exact foot shape from home:
How to Measure Your Foot Shoe Size – The Most Simple and Effective Way!
