Extra Depth Sneakers for Women – Best Sneakers for Women with High Insteps and Foot Conditions!

extra-depth-sneakers-for-women

Do you feel like you always have a hard time getting your sneakers on and off? Are your sneakers putting extra pressure on the top part of your feet (instep)? I will show you a selection of the best extra depth sneakers for women that will allow your feet to fit deeply inside the shoes, preventing your instep from rubbing against the top part of the shoes.

Extra depth shoes allow extra room in the inside of the shoe, and this extra space can accommodate your high instep or allow you to fit orthotics or comfortable insoles inside your shoes. Sneakers that provide extra depth are also ideal for women with foot conditions such as hammertoes, bunions, swollen feet, or any other condition that takes extra space inside the shoes.

One of the most common reasons why women need extra depth sneakers is from having a high instep. Most women don’t know what the instep of the foot is, and refer to their feet as being “tall”. The instep is the is the bony structure on top of the foot:

As you can see, that foot has a lot of extra volume that needs to be fitted inside the shoe, hence the importance of shoes that provide extra depth.

I want to start by clarifying a common misconception among women who assume that having a high arch automatically translates into having a high instep and vice versa. The arch and the instep of your foot are unrelated.

My Experience Fitting Women’s Shoes – Over a Decade of Shoe Fitting Experience

My most recent experience was with a woman who not only had a high instep, but due to poor circulation, the top part of her feet swell along with her ankles.   The other challenging part was that her feet were also extra wide. I was able to find a pair of everyday sneakers but we were not able to find any Mary Janes style shoes as the straps were not long enough.

You are going to be able to wear the sneakers I recommend for everyday walking or going to the gym to workout, as in addition to providing extra depth they provide the following features:

  • Substantial Outsole
  • Firm Heel Counter
  • Lightweight and Flexible

What Makes the Sneakers I Recommend Effective for High Insteps/Foot Conditions?

The sneakers I recommend will allow your feet to fit deeply inside the shoes and accommodate your high instep or foot condition. That extra room in the inside of the shoe will help prevent your bunions or swollen feet from rubbing against the shoes.

For example, take a look at the difference in depth between one of the shoes I recommend and a different style. The shoes below are the same width and length, but do you notice how the New Balance shoe is a lot deeper compared to the Asics style?

Most sneakers don’t come labeled as extra deep so the only way to tell which shoes fit deeper than others is from having fitted those shoes before.

At the shoe store that I work for we also fit several women who wear orthotics. In order to accommodate these orthotics we need to find shoes that provide extra depth, so that also helped me get familiar with which shoes are deeper than others.

What Are the Best Shoe Brands that Manufacture Extra Depth Sneakers for Women?

I have fitted several different women’s shoe brands, but there are 2 specific ones that are more consistent when it comes to manufacturing extra depth sneakers for women:

Orthofeet

This shoe company offers sneakers that are biomechanically engineered with unique comfort features to offer the very best solution for women with foot conditions or “complicated” foot shapes. Orthofeet combines the very latest, cutting-edge athletic footwear technology and therapeutic detailing to bring you the highest level of comfort and protection for your feet, knees and lower back. In addition to providing extra depth, Orthofeet sneakers provide the following features:

➡️ Round toe box offers extra room for women with wide feet. All orthofeet sneakers are available in different width such as wide (‘W”, “EE”), and extra wide (“XW”, “EEE”).

➡️ The sneakers come with a foam padded interior that eases pressure on your feet and enhances comfort.

➡️ The sneakers provide an anatomical arch support that helps align the foot properly.

New Balance

It’s highly likely that you are already familiar with this shoe brand. Did you know that New Balance makes or assembles more than 4 million pairs of athletic footwear per year in the USA? Where the domestic value is at least 70%, they label their shoes Made in the USA.

There are specific shoes from New Balance that are ideal for women who need extra room inside their shoes. In addition to providing extra depth, New Balance sneakers provide the following features:

➡️ Round toe box offers extra room for women with wide feet. All orthofeet sneakers are available in different width such as wide (‘W”, “EE”), and extra wide (“XW”, “EEE”).

➡️ Substantial outsoles and firm heel counter for excellent arch and heel support.

➡️ The sneakers are lightweight and flexible to prevent your feet from easily getting tired.

This doesn’t mean that all shoes from these 2 shoe brands provide extra depth, they have certain styles that are deeper than others and those are the ones I will recommend shortly. However, before I show you a selection of the best extra depth sneakers for women I want to make sure that you know your exact foot length and exact foot shape.

Just because you have worn a certain size for most of your life that doesn’t mean that your foot size has not changed. Did you know that as we age the body’s ligaments and tendons lose their strength and ability to spring back? This means that our arches decrease, which flattens and lengthens the foot and toes. This often results in an increase in shoe size by a half-size or more.

In addition, do you know whether you have narrow, medium, wide, or extra wide feet? Do you know whether you have a high arch or a high instep? I help women determine this in a different article I wrote called:

  1. Do any Dansko clogs fit high insteps and high arches? I have a pair of Dansko boots in a 42 (I wear women’s 11 extra wide in New Balance sneakers) that fit well, but the professional style hits me in The highest part of by instep and puts too much pressure on the top of my foot, causing pain. I see there are many different styles of clogs and I’m wondering if one of them is deeper and allows more room for high instep. Thank you so much for your info and Q&A.
