I believe walking is one of the most underrated forms of exercise. When people take walking as a form of exercise they are improving their circulation, reducing their body fat, supporting their joints, strengthening their muscles, and even reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease!
To get all the benefits that walking provides, we must wear the correct type of shoes in the correct shoe size. Keep in mind that if you are not wearing the correct type of shoes or the correct shoe size, you won’t get any of the benefits that the shoe has to offer, and you will end up creating all sorts of issues to your feet.
Have you been looking for a pair of comfortable, supportive, and breathable walking shoes? Do you tend to walk long distances and like doing it so in comfortable shoes?
I have been working for a specialized shoe store for over 10 years now and I help women find the perfect pair of shoes for their feet. The store focuses in helping women with foot and leg issues as well as “complicated” foot shapes. Over the years I became familiar with the best walking shoes for women.
We need to carry shoes that are not only well-made and supportive, but also that are available in different widths such as narrow (N), medium (M), wide (W), and extra wide (XW).
Do you ever feel like your feet and legs get tired when you are walking around? Do you ever feel pain in the bottom or the top of your feet?
Before you go to your foot doctor complaining about your feet, leg, or back pain, always make sure you are wearing the correct shoes.
One of the most common mistakes women make is walking around in running shoes. The main difference between a person who walks and runs is the way their feet land and impact the floor. The walker is striking with the heel first as opposed to a runner who strikes in-sole first.
That’s the reason why walking shoes are usually more flexible than running shoes, and they provide more arch and heel support to protect the feet where the impact is higher.
What you should know is that walking shoes are designed with walking in mind. When we walk, our body weight is distributed more evenly on our feet than we when run.
A good walking shoe provides the following features:
✅ Arch support
✅ Ankle support
Did you know that over 80% of women are wearing the wrong shoe size?

What are the Best Walking Shoes for Women? – 5 Important Features!
✅ Lightweight and Flexible: Your walking shoes must be flexible and lightweight (this will make it easy for you to move around every time you take a step). When looking for shoes, always make sure you grab the shoe and flex it at the front to check whether it’s flexible enough. The shoe should bend easily; take a look at the picture below for clarification.
✅ Breathable: It’s highly likely that after walking for a long period of time your feet will start sweating. When your feet start to sweat, it makes the shoe a hospitable place for bacteria to thrive in and that can lead to several foot issues. Always look for shoes with mesh uppers to allow your feet to breathe.
✅ Arch Support: Shoes with arch support will support and cushion your feet every time they impact the ground, and the same applies to ankle support since your heel is the one who touches the ground first when you’re walking.
The picture below shows a shoe with arch support, so always look in that part of the shoe to make sure the shoe provides good arch support. Slide your finger inside the shoe and check if you feel like a bump, that will guarantee you that the shoe provides good arch support.
✅ Ankle Support: To check if the shoe provides good ankle support, always feel the back of the shoe (heel counter), and the firmer it feels, the better. The picture below shows you where the heel counter of the shoe is located.
✅ Extra Padding: A shoe with good padding will protect your feet against blisters and bruises.
If you are a woman with narrow, wide or extra wide feet, it might be more challenging to find walking shoes that fit. However, because I have been working for a fitting shoe store for over 10 years, I know which shoes come in narrow, wide, and extra wide widths.

To prevent your toes from rubbing against the front or side part of the shoes, I highly recommend that you order these shoes half a size larger than the size that your feet measure. This translates to 0.3 inches or 0.6 centimeters of space between your longest toe and the end of the shoes.

It’s also very important to tie your shoes properly to get as much support and stability. If your shoes are not tied properly, you will be more prone to developing foot and leg pain.
I tie my shoes a particular way which I really love because it hugs my feet and secures my ankles and I called this technique the “reverse the laces technique”.
You don’t need to tie your shoes this particular way, but if you want to try my method you just need to follow these 3 easy steps:
1-Start with leaving the top two eyelets of the shoe open.
2-Go through the top hole first.
3-Go through the holes that you left open
You are all done! Hopefully, you will notice a difference right away!
Socks Are Important Too! – Keep Your Feet Healthy
Socks play a huge role in keeping our feet and legs healthy! They act as a barrier between our feet and the shoes, and help protect our feet against infections, blisters, and calluses.
Getting the correct type of sock and the correct sock size has the same importance as getting the correct shoe style and the correct shoe size! I am the type of person who doesn’t like his socks to be too big or too small, they must be just right. I also want my socks to be seamless since I feel like they are always bothering me.
When socks are too small they constrict toe movement and squeeze the toes together, making them overlap each other which can lead to blisters and corns. On the other side, when socks are too big, they tend to fold behind your feet causing discomfort.
Below you can find a selection of some of the better-made, breathable, seamless, and comfortable women socks:
Walking Shoes For Work? – Take Care Of Your Feet!
We know that whenever we are walking we need our shoes to handle that repetitive heel-to-toe rolling motion. Some women work on their feet all day, and for them to be able to focus only on doing their work properly, they must wear comfortable shoes.
Can you imagine having to be on your feet all day in shoes that are not comfortable or that don’t offer enough support to your feet? I remember that one of my first jobs when I came to the United States was working at a restaurant where I had to be on my feet all day and I always had issues with my feet and legs feeling tired…
In the beginning, I thought it was normal for me to feel that way since I was on my feet all day. But once I tried a pair of different shoes that were more supportive, the pain started going away and then it fully disappeared.
If you work in a place where you have to be on your feet all day, you must wear comfortable shoes.
I am going to leave you with a couple of articles that describe the best work shoes for women:
